The root cells of a bonsai, like all plant cells, need oxygen.

A well-drained coarse-grained bonsai soil and large drainage holes in the bottom of the bonsai pot are important for sufficient oxygen to reach the roots.

In the case of large drainage holes, the substrate drains through the drainage holes after transplanting the bonsai. Therefore, these holes are covered with bonsai potting mesh (drainage grids). Since they slide easily when planting a bonsai tree, it is important to fix them.
