Akadama is simply the best substrate for growing bonsai. Produced in Japan, it is suitable for many species that are traditionally formed in upright or sloping styles, such as ficuses, junipers, pines, and elms.
Contains azomite, which improves soil acidity and breaks down into a staggering number of trace elements. It has great porosity, retaining large amounts of water without overloading the Bonsai root, and provides a high power of nutrient absorption.
Slow-release and easy to wet, Akadama is lightweight and retains a high cation exchange capacity, and as such helps remove excess salts from the roots, reducing harmful build-up of metabolic waste.
Provides excellent aeration and drainage while retaining a moderate amount of water. It is frequently used to promote new root growth, as well as remove salts by leaching. Contributes to a good nutrient balance and ideal pH for most plant species.
The biggest advantage to using Akadama is that it has porosity, or the ability to hold water and store it in microscopic pores and cavities for a longer period of time. This ability to retain water and nutrients is crucial for any type of plant life, and is even more so for a bonsai species. This type of soil also has the benefit of being a free-draining type, meaning that it is easy for Akadama to drain unnecessary water given enough time. Yet another advantage to using this soil would be in the colour of Akadama, which can darken when moisten, thereby helping the caretaker to know when to water the plant.
