Tigrella Bicolore variety. Fruit 25 g. Cherry pear brindled, very sweet and very crunchy. Yields about 5kg per plant.

Tomato is a perennial herbaceous plant, cultivated as an annual, sensitive to cold. The early varieties (those that flower and fruit more quickly) usually reach a length of 1.2 m; the late varieties, on the other hand, are almost always larger and reach up to 2.5 m in length.
The fruit is a berry. In wild tomato species the fruit is bilocular, while in cultivated varieties it is bilocular or 30-locular, most frequently with 5 to 9 locules. The shape of the fruit is variable, generally depressed-globose or oblong. The seeds are numerous, small, flattened, yellowish-grey, hairy, embedded in a gelatinous mass formed by the parenchymatous tissue that fills the cavities of the ripe fruit.

GENERAL TIPS FOR TOMATO CULTIVATION

  • It prefers fertile, cool, moist, loose, permeable and deep soils.
  • It is a tropical plant, so it grows well in Mediterranean climates and can be harvested almost all year round without forcing the crop. The minimum temperature is 12ºC and the optimum temperature is between 18 and 20ºC.
  • Sowing is done mainly in tray seedbeds with alveoli, or with direct sowing, which is used almost exclusively in the case of creeping tomatoes for industry. Tray seedbeds are planted in air-conditioned greenhouses.
  • Transplanting is carried out as soon as no frost is expected in the area.
  • In the case of varieties with indeterminate growth, the plants should be trained when they are 20-30 cm high.
  • The planting frame ranges from 40-70 cm between plants and 60-120 cm between rows. This will result in a population of between 20,000 for vigorous market varieties and almost 40,000 for industrial varieties with compact vegetation.
  • Water immediately after transplanting, then after 20-25 days when the first flowers set and then approximately every 8-10 days. If drip irrigation is used, it should be borne in mind that the greatest water requirements are from fruit set onwards.
  • It is a plant that accepts abundant fertilisers. It should be fertilised with N-P-K and magnesium as a base and with nitrogen and potassium during cultivation.
  • Careful attention to the health of the crop, especially when the environmental conditions are somewhat extreme for its cultivation, such as high humidity, low or very high temperatures, or after each pruning or harvesting when wounds are made on the plant.
  • It is advisable to prune the plants and there are varieties where pruning is essential. Pruning increases production, increases earliness, improves quality and makes it easier to carry out treatments as there is not so much foliage.
  • Depending on the destination of the fruit (salad market, ripe market, bunches, "pa amb tomaquet", concentrated industry, peeled industry, tacos, etc.) and type of fruit (ribbed, rounded, pear, long life, etc.), harvesting is carried out at one time or another.
  • The varieties for industry are fully machinable.
