Japanese Kanuma Substrate for Bonsai Azalea large grain 12-25 mm (15L)

Kanuma is a substrate of Japanese origin. It is a classic Japanese granulated soil with an acidic Ph, so its use is usually focused on azaleas, or species that like acidic soils.

Kanuma is used so that azalea bonsais can spread their roots in a completely healthy way and therefore contain adequate aeration. Thanks to Kanuma, you will absorb the right water regardless of its pH.

This land is acidic and almost sterile, so we must fertilize it well so that our bonsai grow vigorously. Kanuma, due to its acidity, is also used when the water we irrigate with is very calcareous. In these cases, a part of kanuma is usually mixed with the substrate.

Differences with the Akadama:

  • It is much lighter
  • Its pH is 6 (bonsai that cannot tolerate lime).
  • Kanuma does not have nutrients in its composition. It is completely inert and only promotes oxygenation of the roots, avoiding the dreaded waterlogging. This causes the bonsai to be fertilized regularly.

How to use

  • Kanuma is usually used without any other substratum or additional fertilizer.
  • Due to the size of the grains, this substrate is used for small bonsais, no more than 20cm
