Picusan® is a patented trap designed for the monitoring and mass trapping of the curculionid beetle Rynchophorus ferrugineus known as the red palm weevil, the most aggressive pest of palm trees.</p >

Picusan® is a soil trap that does not bury itself with a pyramidal design with a rough external wall that facilitates the climb of the weevil through it to end up falling, through a funnel, into a bowl of water

Picusan® has been tested by the Sanitary Inspection Service of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

How is the Picusan trap used against the red palm weevil?

Open the lid and add the following:

  • Aggregation pheromone whose main component is ferrugineol.
  • Vegetable remains (remains of palm leaves, apples, palm pieces, dates, etc.) and water.
  • kairomone
  • Soapy water, since it prevents the water from evaporating, as well as preventing the adult from flying and escaping from the trap.

- Place the traps on the ground and not hanging, since the insect has a clumsy flight and once it approaches the trap, it is easier for it to enter on foot.
- Do not place the trap less than 50 meters from the palm tree.
- 1 trap will be placed every 1000-1500 meters or 1 every 50-100 meters in alignments of palm trees.

Check every 15 days to see the level of captures in the traps, remove them and add soapy water. The attractants have a minimum useful life of 3 months, so they will have to be changed when this time passes.

The use of traps is very useful to know if an area is free of red palm weevil or if there is a presence of the plague, know at what levels it is.

It is good to place a trapping net for monitoring, if it is suspected that there is red weevil:

  • Place 1 trap every 3 hectares. approx. (for control. In a severe case, put a trap every 1000 to 1500 meters)
  • Place each trap 50 meters from the nearest palm tree.
  • Depending on the level of catches, we will see the peaks where there are more problems and we will carry out the treatments at that time.
  • Maintain the trapping net throughout the year.
  • Perform reviews every 2-3 weeks.

The advantages of using pheromones and traps are the following:

- Pheromones are completely harmless to humans and domestic animals
- They are used to detect pest infections early
- They respect the biological balance of crops
- They do not contain toxic residues to food or the environment
- They do not generate resistance in pests
- They optimize the application of phytosanitary products, reducing the cost.

This package does not contain the pheromone or kairomone, which are sold separately.
