The pH electrode is a sensor based on an electrochemical cell. This cell begins to suffer wear from the moment of its manufacture until the end of its useful life. The life of an electrode is limited, being typical 1 year to 2 years. Careful handling and good cleaning are essential for good measurement results. Before measuring or calibrating, the electrode must be rinsed with distilled water. The electrode should never be touched with fingers, paper, or anything other than water.

Calibration:

To calibrate the instrument, standard solutions (Buffer) are used, considering that the values that are expected to be measured must be within the range of the standards used. The first calibration standard must be that of pH 7 or pH 6.864 (neutral pH), and then the standard corresponding to Acid or Base values according to the working range. Between each calibration, always rinse with distilled water and then remove excess water by shaking the electrode.

Measurement:

Immerse the tip of the electrode at least 2.5 cm into the solution to be measured, wait one minute for the reading to stabilize and read. After each measurement, the electrode should be rinsed.

Storage:

After finishing the measurement, rinse the electrode with distilled water and store it. This can be done on the lid of the electrode or a bottle. In both cases, leave the electrode moistened with a storage solution that can be based on KCl 3.5M or, failing that, buffer 4. Do not use moist cotton or anything that touches the electrode bulb, as it is very easily damaged.

Deep cleaning:

In the event that the electrode requires further cleaning, either because it is measuring in wastewater or with a lot of color, a 0.1% hydrochloric acid-based cleaning solution should be used, immersing the tip of the electrode for at least 15 minutes.
